Youth in Focus is committed to making sure you have a place to be creative, heard, foster community, and connect with your peers. Check out our new classes below and sign up for one or more. Open to any teen between the ages of 13-19.
All Youth in Focus programs are free, and we provide free bus passes if needed. All supplies and equipment are provided. Your donation helps cover the cost of our amazing art educators, equipment, and program space. We are committed to equitable arts access for ALL youth.
Masks are highly encouraged! Staff will remain masked.
Beginning Digital w/Chloe
In this introductory course, students will learn the basics of DSLR camera operations, work with post-production editing software, and practice visual art critiques with their peers. You will learn about contemporary and historic examples of photographers and ways that visual media influences our culture. To wrap up, you will print and frame your final images for the friends and family showcase!
Beginning Darkroom w/Dene
Learn how to photograph, develop, and print black-and-white film with Dene! Become versed in using a film camera, a light meter, and various composition techniques. Dig into hands-on techniques for making photograms, small and large prints, and adjusting contrast and brightness. We will be learning the rules of the darkroom and then breaking them!
Intermediate Darkroom w/ Chloe
Building on the skills from Beginning Darkroom, this class encourages students to work on an artistic theme throughout the course, culminating in two final prints that work as a series. Youth will use a variety of cameras, manual and automatic, and more advanced technical skills are introduced, depending on the student level. 120 film and medium-format cameras can be incorporated as well.
* You must have taken at least one Beginning Darkroom class with Youth in Focus to be eligible for Intermediate Darkroom.
