My name is Evan and I am a senior in high school. I have been doing photography here at YiF for the past 4 years. I primarily do 35mm film, but this semester I used 120mm or medium format film. I like the chill environment of the darkroom and am inspired by nature, architecture, and other film photographers on my Instagram feed.
This is a picture of the Volunteer Park Conservatory. I live near this park and come to it when I am feeling stressed and tired of being indoors. Due to the nature of the medium format camera, I had to stay relatively far away from my subjects, meaning I couldn’t take very close up small pictures that I usually do. This made me expand my view to be able to focus on my interests of architecture more. I chose this building because I like all of the shapes and lines it has, but also because of the contrast between the round letters of the open sign and their sharp surroundings. Additionally, I am glad I was able to print a photo that reflects my other work with the daffodils planted at the bottom.
My name is Evan and I am 18. I have been doing photography here at YiF for the past 4 years. Youth in Focus has been a welcoming and safe space for me to express myself and do photography. I primarily use a 35mm film camera. I like the chill environment of the darkroom and am inspired by nature and plants.
This picture of plants is taken off a trail I visit often. I chose it because its large range in tonality and clarity fit with my greater style. I learned to spot tone for this picture because once it was dry I realized it was covered in dust. I’m excited to continue my journey as a photographer in college!
Hello, my name is Evan, and I am 17. I chose this photo of cattails to be my final print because I really like the lighting and clarity of it. I took it with my 200 mm lens at a pond in a forest. Over my years of photography, I have developed a style in which lines and shapes are emphasized. Lighting and tonality are also very important to me, and I am proud of the natural contrast I was able to achieve in this photo. I plan to take more photos like this in one more Youth in Focus class before I go to college.
This photo is of a plant I found in Maui, Hawaii. I chose it to be my final print since I love the rich tone variation of the whole photo, especially in the white leaves in the center. I feel that this photograph is also reflective of my work as a whole, since tonality and shapes are things that I value in my photography. I’ve never seen photography as something that should be symbolic. As a logical person, I seek out patterns and balance. So, I like to make my photos satisfying to look at, and think I’ve really achieved that with the different leaf shapes and colors.
