My name is Sam. I live in Seattle. I’ve been drawing since I was a little kid. I’ve done a few camps but am mainly self-taught. I do character design and also love creating stories for my characters. Recently I’ve been bored of drawing and have branched out to other art forms like photography, crochet, and pottery. I love designing and creating things, there's something really special to that.
This is a photo of my friend Betty. I love the contrast of the tree branches, and how the sharp shadows fall on her face is simply beautiful. The day this was taken, we found a spot under a tree in Seward Park. The tree's branches touched the ground, creating a home within it. Everything was perfect, beautiful, and peaceful that day, and this photo captures that.
Distance
I live in Seattle by Seward Park and it's one of my favorite places to go. The final image I chose is a picture of Seward Park taken from my house. I’ve lived in this house for the majority of my life, and it’s the view I've looked at for all that time. I chose this picture because I liked the sort of eerie vibe it has. And the best surprise, this is actually two pictures on top of eachother, called a double exposure. I love doing both taking pictures and actually printing them. I think they're both very different experiences and take different types of skills for each. Aside from photography I also like to draw, crochet, make jewelry and pottery. I enjoyed developing a better understanding of my personal style, my motivation this spring wasn't the best but I'm still happy with my work. I also have gained more skills and a much higher understanding of how to print in the darkroom.
This is a portrait of my friend Azura (photo 1) printed on top of an inverted image of some trees. This was a multi step process where I made an original print of the trees, once that print is done and dry I exposed it over a blank piece of paper, this will then make the image inverted. Before developing I marked the top of the paper to make the trees intentionally upside down and then exposed the portrait onto the paper.
Lost
My name is Sam. This was my third time doing darkroom photography. My goal was to explore more in Washington and go to farther away places. My final image is of rusty barbed wire at Northern State Recreation area which is an abandoned mental hospital. I wanted to go with an eerie and dark theme this quarter, and I like to print darker. I feel like I could get lost in this picture.
