This course will focus on the basics of digital photography and skateboarding. Youth will learn various styles of photographing skateboarding as a sport, and will also learn the basics of portraiture and landscape photography. In partnership with CHILL, we’ll be taking field trips to local skateparks where you’ll put your lessons into practice and learn to Skateboard! All Youth in Focus programs are free or donation-optional, and we provide free bus passes if needed.
All supplies and equipment are provided. Your donation helps cover the cost of our amazing art educators, equipment, and program space. We are committed to equitable arts access for ALL youth ages 13-19 years old! Masks are required.
My name is Adonis J.S. and i took digital photography at Youth in Focus, i focused on composition and close ups. I took this photo in school because my friend told me we should so we did and it turned out to be really cool looking because it reminded me as an album cover, so thats why i chose this photo.
My name is Azura M. I live in seattle. And I'm a multimedia artist. This is my fourth class at youth in focus.
My final is an image of the elementary school near my house I went to and my self portrait is an image my friend tally helped me take at the park near the same school.
Oftentimes I think of my childhood and what things used to be like back then, all bright, beautiful and new. And now, I see all the changes. Dandelions don’t grow as often, the grass isn’t quite as green, the heat is hotter every year. But when I took this photo, I felt like I was taken back to those times. When the weather didn’t change drastically, and the bright and warm summer nights were still warm summer nights, things were bright and beautiful, even at night. To me this photo is nostalgia.
The drag and pop of colors in this photo are really what stood out to me to choose it as my favorite, and what makes it extra special to me is that it was taken on my balcony in my home where I got to see these changes.
My name is Betty and this is my 2nd class with youth in focus. My main picture is of my friend Tally, I took it on a photowalk to the park. I have a big interest in portraits, and I love it when a picture really captures the essence of a person. I loved the way she looked in this, and I also love how it feels to know a person well enough that you can capture their personality and energy through something as 2D as a photograph. I am also obsessed with color and I think my whole series really shows that.
Hi my name is Jack I’m in 7th grade I signed up to youth and focus to try and learn more about photography and editing. I have learned many things like iso, shutter speed and aperture. My first picture was taken on a small island off the coast of shelton. It shows a sunset on the beach with a campfire and people having fun around it.
My final image to me feels like I took a snapshot out of a movie- it feels so unreal as to how I was able to get what I saw so perfectly. I love how the colors of the buildings really pop. It feels like I got a perfect view of the city from a little pocket of the forest or something like that. It brings me great joy that I was able to make the image look how I wanted to, and that I was able to capture it so beautifully in the first place. It’s noise-y but so romantic. I took this picture on one of our first photo walks- it was one of the first pictures I took. I love it more and more each time I get the chance to look at it. Like how did I do that. How did I capture what I saw so perfectly. It makes me so incredibly happy.
My name is Tally La., this is my third class with YIF. Over this time I have learned so much valuable information and I can't thank the staff enough.
This photo was taken at the Des Moines Marina.
